Not Sure How to Start a Community Garden? Try These Steps

Many people like the idea of starting a community garden but it can be a lot of work not only to start one but also to sustain one. I think we have all seen gardens at schools, in the community, or in someone’s yard that were once lovely but are now overgrown and unused. Yes, I encourage everyone to try gardening but one must also realize that it does take constant commitment and investment (time, energy, money, etc.).

So, I want to point out a few places to start in your own community before you go ahead and try to make a community garden. One could view this as a sort of pulse check for your community and if a community garden would be a good fit — also if it currently doesn't seem like a good fit you could also help push to make those change!

Here are some practical steps to help you get started:

1. Assess Community Interest:
— Begin by gauging interest within your community. Talk to neighbors, friends, local organizations, and community leaders to see if there is enthusiasm for a community garden. Is your community even interested in such a project?
