In an era of rapid urbanization and increasing detachment from the natural world, it has become more crucial than ever to instill in our youth the knowledge and skills needed to cultivate their own food. Beyond the practical benefits of self-sufficiency, teaching children how to grow food introduces them to a fascinating world of science.

By integrating gardening into elementary, middle, and high school curricula, we can foster a generation of environmentally-conscious and scientifically-literate individuals who understand the interconnectedness of food production, ecosystems, and our overall well-being.

And this is what NYC is starting to do with 60 of their schools in the city — not all of the schools but still an amazing start! Through this new program students will be able to experience hands-on projects and lessons at their urban farms at the schools. The non-profit, New York Sun Works, is making this opportunity possible for the students and has reached over 100,000 students so far with their programs.
