Five Ways to Support Local Pollinators in Your Garden

Globally, pollinators are on the decline. This is just an unfortunate fact. But we can make an effort in our own communities to help fight this trend. There are several simple, science-backed ways that people can support local pollinators in their gardens. Some of these include:
- Planting a variety of flowering plants that bloom at different times throughout the growing season. This can provide a steady source of nectar and pollen for pollinators. Do some research on your region and find out what plants are native there.
- Avoiding the use of pesticides and other chemicals in the garden. Many pesticides can be harmful to pollinators, so using organic gardening methods is a better option.
- Providing a source of water for pollinators. Pollinators need water to survive, so placing a shallow dish of water in the garden can help to attract them.
- Creating a habitat for pollinators. Pollinators need places to rest and nest, so creating a habitat such as a bee hotel or a butterfly garden can help to support them.
