I know I sound like a broken record but I truly believe that community gardens could be one of the few common spaces left in our societies that could help enact authentic, positive changes. Along with libraries, rec centers, parks, and food banks I cannot think of any other places for those out of school.

In the heart of community gardens, we find not only the bounty of the earth but also the richness of human connection, reminding us that when we grow together, we thrive together. Similar to that quote about rising tides lifting all boats. When we are all healthier and more supported the entire society benefits.

From HOAs to red tape from cities, I know there are many different obstacles to creating more community gardens. If there could be more ways to incentivize these gardens and give people reasons to go — it doesn’t just have to be for gardening. Offer yoga classes, concerts in the park, plant sales, etc. It can be a thriving center of the town, much more than just a garden.

Starting small may be the easier way for many communities to start but I am not sure that is viable in all situations either. I would say work with elected officials, elect officials that consider such options, and inquire with city councils. Much of the time people don’t think it is possible but no one has asked yet.
